Biography:

Outlaw, James(b. 1744, Bertie County, NC - d. Apr 22, 1826, Burncoat, Duplin County, NC) Married in 1767 in Duplin County, NC to Elizabeth Grady (b. 9 Feb 1750, Duplin County, NC; d. 3 Sep 1830, Duplin County, NC) She was the daughter of Mary (Whitfield) and John Grady. Her Will is in Duplin County records. He is buried in family cemetery near Outlaw's Bridge, northeastern Duplin County. Original will is in the public recorded for Duplin County, North Carolina, dated 1826. He built the crossing over North East River, which has since been known as Outlaw's Bridge, in Duplin County.

Service: Member of the Committee on Safety, 1775; He was a soldier (Private) in the Revolution, serving in the Company of his brother, Captain Alexander Outlaw, in an "expedition against the insurgents", 1776; fought at Battle of Moore's Creek Ridge., and later as a Lieutenant (N.C. Revolutionary Army Account Volume V, p. 19, folio 1). Commissioner of the town of Sarecta (never developed), Duplin County's first established town. Captain in Duplin militia service 1787 and 1788, as shown by tax records from Captain Outlaw's District, and was for nearly thirty years, a Justice of the County Court of Pleas and Quarterly Sessions, serving a part of that time as Chairman of Said Court.
