Biography:

Joseph Gibson immigrated from Ireland in 1765 (age 16) and was settled in Rowan Parish when on 6 Dec 1779 he was enrolled as Private, Capt. Richard Graham's Militia, Col. Andrew Hampton's North Carolina Regiment .He did not claim to have been in any battles but was in Capt. John Johnson Company, Gen, Littlington's Brigade. He served in Gate's forces against Tories in South Carolina until after Gate's defeat and was discharged near Charles Towne, SC on 9 March 1781. He was in the militia that routed the Tory gathering at Ramsour's Mill.

In January 1781 Gibson was in militia service with Capt. Richard Grahan's Company,. Col. Williams' North Carolina Regiment raised by General Davidson for Gen Morgan's Command. This group did not get to Morgan before his victory at Cowpens but was then directed under Gen. Davidson to track and prevent the British from crossing the Catawba to the west as Cornwallis moved toward Guilford Courthouse. Gibson was discharged 10 March 1781 prior to the battle at Guilford. On 14 Sept 1781 he was enlisted in Capt. William Bell's Co. Col. Francis Locke's North Carolina Reg. Gen. Grifford Rutherford force on Robinson's Plantation in Montgomery County. The force-marched to Wilmington which was taken on 18 Nov. and Gibson was discharged on 8 Dec 1781.
He married Mary Hanna McCree in 1789 in Rowan. A petition was filed in Rowan Court of Pleas and Quarters and allowed in 1832.
