Biography:

Philip Miller, III was born August 31, 1756 in what was then Craven County, North Carolina. He was the great grandson of Jacob (Müller) Miller, a German Palatine who arrived in 1710 with Baron Christoph von Graffenried and helped to settle New Bern, North Carolina. Philip married Elizabeth Nunn and settled the family plantation on Joshua's Creek that is located on present day Vine Swamp Road in Lenoir County, North Carolina. Philip enlisted in Rowan County, NC. He served as a Private during 1779 to 1781. He was engaged in the Battle of Camden. His land holdings were vast, and the original land grants are located in the North Carolina Archives in the E. L. Miller Collection. Philip occasionally preached, following John Wesley's teaching of Christian doctrine. He died on December 26, 1824. Philip and wife Elizabeth are buried in the old family cemetery off of Vine Swamp Road 
(N35º 07.325' W77º 34.888'). His grave has been marked with an SAR grave marker.
